Recording on Barstool Sports and their quest for global domination

Bar stool launched its sports betting app in Pennsylvania in mid-September 2020. PA was the first state with a Barstool Sportsbook. Upon arrival, President of Barstool Dave portnoy made a bold proclamation in an email calling Pennsylvania “Stage 1 of our plan for world domination.”

“Obviously my enemies, of whom there are many, hope that we fail. Well, I have an unwavering faith in the loyalty of our fans that make me believe we’ll do what we always do, and that silences the critics and stuns Wall Street with our performance.

A little over a year later, where does Barstool rank among PA sports betting? How is Barstool Sports, the digital media company, growing? And what does all of this mean for Pennsylvania Stoolies?

Barstool Sportsbook started in PA

PDG Sports Bar Stool Erika Nardini tweeted:

“Day 1 of our future in sports betting. We start in PA and go from there. We have the best players and the biggest machine for connecting content and fans on the internet. Best of all, this place is all guts and hearts. We are going there. “

Penn National, who acquired a 36% of the capital in Barstool in January 2020, sent a press release on online sports betting. But – like virtually all press releases – it was standard without any proclamation of world conquest or appeal to enemies.

Barstool Sportsbook in PA

When the Barstool Sportsbook app was launched in PA, it was the tenth sports betting application in the state, which already included FanDuel and DraftKings. It came at the start of a promising NFL betting season which for the Philadelphia Eagles and a dazzling 11-0 start for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bar stools best month in Pennsylvania for the handle and turnover in Pennsylvania was december 2020 where they took $ 71.8 million in bets and reported $ 14.7 million In income. It was also Barstool Sports Betting Month 20% holdback. In the world of the immediate reaction of social media, this caused a stir. But since December 2020, Barstool’s influence for the 2020/2021 financial year was 8.4%.

The handle of the stool struck its the lowest $ 31.8 million in June 2021 but turnover increased after dropping the previous two months to $ 3.2 million.

BetMGM sports betting launched in Pennsylvania in mid-December 2020. In January, they were the # 4 operator in terms of grip and revenue, just behind Barstool. In June 2021, they had moved into the Place n ° 3 previously owned by Barstool.

Barstool’s charitable efforts in Pennsylvania

Portnoy joined the effort in October 2020 to save the historic Reading terminal in Philadelphia. Users who have signed up users making a first deposit of $ 100 or more to an account on the recently launched Barstool Sportsbook app, Penn National corresponded to the deposit with a $ 100 donation to Reading Terminal Market until he reaches his GoFundMe goal of $ 250,000.

Portnoy started on Bar stool fund in December 2020 to help small businesses that are suffering survive the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of small Pennsylvania businesses such as restaurants, dance studios, and bowling have been the recipients of the funds. Penn National has contributed more than $ 4.6 million at the Fund of bar stools.

A different approach to advertising

Prior to Barstool Sportsbook and the legalization of gambling outside of Nevada, Dave Portnoy founded Barstool Sports in Massachusetts in 2003. What started out as a print publication with fantastic gambling ads and sports news has grown into a digital media company who fused sport, gender and brand of bold Barstool personalities on blogs, podcasts and videos.

In 2020, Barstool Sports recorded a growth of 57% at $ 150 million. During a initial presentation to advertising agencies in September, Nardini predicts that the company will become over $ 200 million in sales at the start of 2022.

Unlike FanDuel and DraftKings whose ads run on TV, the internet, billboards, on buses (and apparently everywhere), you won’t see ads for Barstool Sportsbook. They build on the buzz, brand recognition and loyalty created by Barstool.

Why advertise when a “Dave Portnoy emergency press conference” reaches its target audience?

Why do PA sports fans listen to Sportsradio WIP Where 93.7 The fan hear advertisements on bar stools? Call her daddy (a podcast formerly owned by Barstool until June 2021) was the # 11 most streamed podcast in the third quarter. Forgive my take of Barstool Sports was No. 50. The only sports-focused podcast in the Top 50 was Bill Simmons Podcast.

Too early to pick a winner, but which one is the most fun

Summer 2021 marked two years since online sports betting arrived in Pennsylvania. More 90% of bets each month are placed in line making sports betting apps the overwhelming preference. Even with FanDuel holding a 40% market share, it is still too early to start crowning the winners and the losers.

Wayne kimmel, Managing Partner of PA-based SeventySix Capital, shared his thoughts:

“It’s exciting where we are today. It’s amazing how fast it grows in Pennsylvania, but at the same time, there is so much more growth. The apps we have and the way we bet on sports will be different. I guarantee it. How it’s going to be different… it’s going to depend on the entrepreneurs. It’s going to be better and a lot more fun.

To what extent can this pleasure already be attributed to Barstool?

While Barstool Sportsbook might not be the number one for revenue or sound management… is it a lot more fun than the rest right now?

Bar stool taking big bites

Bar stool Sport moves fast. Apparently right after college players could take advantage of the name, image, and likeness, Barstool (the media company, not the bookie) started partnering with college athletes. Now they are growing in virtual meal, Frozen pizza, and sports media rights.

Nardini said at the Chicago Sports Summit in October:

“When I joined Barstool in 2016, we had 12 people. No one took us seriously. We started to make it a business. We took a brand that was very popular and sought to integrate it into a business. From 2016 to 2021, we had to fight for every possible opportunity to build this business, grow the brand, find more fans, connect with fans, and diversify the way we make money.

“You can no longer ignore Barstool Sports. We are everywhere. There is no one who thought we would be this great five years ago. Neither our investors, nor our board of directors, nor our partners… there was no one to help this company become so important. We got this big on our own. We don’t need ESPN and we don’t need the NFL to bless us.

Arizona Bowl Sports Bar Stool

At the end of July 2021, Barstool became the exclusive title sponsor of Arizona Bowl which will henceforth be called the Arizona Bowl Sports Bar Stool. It also includes broadcasting rights and will be broadcast on Barstool’s website, app and social media. Previously, CBS broadcast the Arizona Bowl. However, when SCS found out that Barstool was the new sponsor, things changed.

Nardini said at the Chicago Sports Summit:

“They (the Arizona Bowl) approached us and asked us to sponsor and we said ‘absolutely’. Then the Arizona Bowl went to CBS and said Barstool Sports was going to be the main sponsor of the bowl game and CBS said “not so soon… we won’t allow Barstool to be a sponsor”.

“Personally, I think it’s a crazy, stupid decision, to understand the marketing platform we have created, the number of eyeballs we bring and the social conversations. Companies pay us millions of dollars to do this for their product and CBS said “no thanks”. The Arizona Bowl came back to us and we said give us the broadcast rights. We’re going to completely reframe the way a college bowl game is produced, promoted, packaged, and brought to life.

Nardini added:

“There is a different way of making live sports interesting for young viewers. There is a different way of bringing a brand to life that is partly broadcast, social, fun and physical. I think this is a turning point in sport and not just for Barstool Sports. “

While presenting to advertisers, Portnoy teased some things that Barstool has scheduled for the Arizona Bowl.

“I have what I want for our halftime show and it’s expensive. It’s a Dave Portnoy guarantee – the most viral moment of New Year’s Eve. It’s awesome and expensive.

“It’s more important than what he just said. He undersold it, ”said Dan“ Big Cat ”Katz.

PA loves Portnoy’s pizza

Portnoy started his “One Bite” pizza reviews in 2017. Some non-sporting fans know him from his pizza and his slogan “one bite, everyone knows the rules”.

Sports bar stool in partnership with Happi Foodi, a frozen meal brand based in Secaucus, NJ, in mid-September 2021 to produce A bite of pizza. The ready-to-reheat pizzas are available at more 3,500 Walmart stores and online at Walmart.com and OneBite.app.

Portnoy tweeted on October 7 that 150k One Bite frozen pizza has been sold, making it the # 1 frozen pizza in the country. He added an asterisk indicating “no evidence of this statement”. He then listed the best stores.

Walmart stores at PA and NJ who managed to make it to the top ten best-selling pizza for a bite were:

  • Brick, New Jersey
  • Washington, Pennsylvania
  • Turnersville, New Jersey
  • Township of the Moon, Pennsylvania

What’s next for the bar stool

Penn National bought theScore to complement Barstool Sportsbook in August 2021. The acquisition will (eventually) allow Barstool Sportsbook to bring its technology internally. This probably signals the end of Barstool using the Kambi platform. During last year’s Super Bowl, a number of PA sports betting apps using Kambi crashed.

Pennsylvania Bar Stool Plans

  • Barstool brand sports bars in Philadelphia. Philadelphia real estate sources say the location will be on the site of the former Brickwall Tavern on Sansom Street.
  • New Sportsbooks bar stools at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Racecourse and Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.
  • When the Hollywood Casino Morgantown mini-casino opens, it will also have a Barstool Sportsbook.
