Hackensack Meridian Health is telling all staff to get vaccinated or get fired.
A note to employees at 13 hospitals and dozens of other health centers managed by HMH set the deadline for October 1 to receive at least one dose of the vaccine. All staff should be fully immunized by November 15 or risk suspension and / or dismissal.
One of New Jersey’s largest hospital groups, the guideline includes all staff, from cleaning crews to receptionists and all medical staff.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Daniel Varga says 70% of all team members are already vaccinated. He expressed concern about the increase in deadly variants (COVID-19), and said vaccinations are “our best way to beat this pandemic once and for all, save lives and get back to normal.” .
âCOVID-19 vaccines have been shown to be safe and very effective in preventing transmission, hospitalizations and death from the virus. Over the past year, we have used every tool at our disposal to protect patients and team members from COVID-19. Over 70 percent of our team members are vaccinated. We are demanding vaccinations for all team members to help stop the spread of this deadly virus and keep our patients, team members and visitors safe. Mandatory vaccinations are the best way to achieve herd immunity and protect our communities from the deadly variants that threaten to wreak havoc in the months to come. They are our best way to beat this pandemic once and for all, save lives and get back to normalcy. – Dr Daniel Varga, Chief Medical Officer, Hackensack Meridian Health
Hackensack Meridian Health’s decision follows a similar directive issued by RWJBarnabas Health in May. At that point, RWJBarnabas began requiring that all staff at supervisory level and above be required to have a COVID vaccine by June 30.
Barry H. Ostrowsky, president and CEO of RWJBarnabas Health, released a statement saying he expected “this will eventually be necessary for all staff.”
